Arlington Park is a 1950s and 1960s neighbourhood around the park and aquatic centre of the same name, with low ranch houses, mature trees and a good number of renovated kitchens and additions. Additions are where heating problems often start: a new room with a supply run tapped off the original trunk can starve the rest of the house and leave the far bedroom cold all winter.
The park and aquatic centre give the neighbourhood its name and Sarasota Memorial Hospital sits at the northern edge, so a good deal of the housing has been extended or reconfigured rather than replaced. An addition over a former carport brings its own supply and return while the original trunk stays the size it always was, and a bedroom above a carport is the classic cold room in this neighbourhood.
Mature oaks shade most of the streets, which is welcome in July and awkward in January, when a unit under canopy sits in colder air than the rest of the block and defrost cycles run longer. A system that is marginally charged will show it first on the coldest mornings. Some older homes here still have a gas furnace in a closet with a flue through the roof, and those are checked for vent condition and spillage before anything else is attempted.
